Happy Valentines Day! This is JandiMan.
One of the things we want users to experience playing Mad World is its grim-dark reality. The setting and stories will be the main tools we will be using to convey that mood. One of the teams responsible for hammering those tools is the adaptation team. Today I caught them by surprise, and asked for an interview, which they hesitated first but finally accepted after an eternity.
Hey guys, can you tell me briefly what you guys do?
Our job is to enrich what we get from the scenario team who basically builds the settings of the game, ultimately to make the story more entertaining and engaging while helping the story make a smooth transition to the game. Simply put, if scenario builds the bones, adaptation adds skins on those.
Could you tell me how you exactly do that, maybe an example?
(sigh) For instance, there’s this village where strange looking crops that look almost like humans are grown by Demons on a plantation. After the scenario team builds that setting first, we sit down together, trying to figure out what kinds of people would live in such a horrible place, the things that they have to go through on a daily basis, the drama, events, all those things. We work things out from there.
I can’t even imagine living in a place like that. Can you give me a sneak-peek?
Sure. There’s this quest that takes place in that village, which may be familiar to those of you who played in the last alpha. Its title goes “Talking Scarecrow”. Here it goes.
Scarecrows in this village are anything but normal. A hideous looking head speared on the top, its body made of wooden polls, it’s not hard to find them in the vicinity of the plantation. They are slaves of labor even after death, looking after crops with that decayed dull face forever and ever... One day a rumor spread among children, a rumor of a strange event…
...what is it?
Some children witnessed one of them talking. A girl who recently lost her father makes her way to the scarecrow as soon as she hears the rumor. She desperately attempts to talk with the scarecrow only to hear nothing in return… Talking scarecrow, is that all just a rumor?...or a secret lies within?
I can’t wait to check out the rest of the story. You definitely piqued my interest. Let’s do this again!
…..(forced smile)
Thank you for reading, and have a great weekend!
